All Follenites are warmly invited to go to a service at St. Paul AME Church in Cambridge (where our Neighboring Faiths RE class has attended services) and, in continuation of our Urban Church Music Friendships Initiative, we’ll also go to a July service at Charles Street AME Church in Roxbury. When we attended last summer, we were welcome beyond our wildest dreams, and Reverend Gregory Groover’s sermon about inclusion and acceptance was truly inspiring. Charles Street is a historic institution with a remarkable music program, highlighting a wide range of gospel and spiritual traditions. They are also the home of the Hamilton-Garrett Music and Arts Academy, the unique and visionary program with whom Follen choirs collaborated in March – HGMAA provides Roxbury & Dorchester youth the opportunity to develop impressive musical skills using traditional African-American music as their learning’s foundation. To attend either of the AME church services on July 7 or July 21, you can either meet up at the church or arrange shared transportation through Director of Music Vivian Montgomery.
July 7: Service at St. Paul in Cambridge is at 9:30am. You can meet me and others at the church at 9:15 or we can arrange shared transportation. Contact Vivian at firstname.lastname@example.org.
