As we begin our worship theme of myth, we will join with our Jewish friends all over the world who are celebrating the holy and joyful holiday of Purim! Myths include wisdom tales from many folk and religious traditions.

One tradition in many synagogues is to act out in word and song the ancient Purim story, as told in the Book of Esther. There are heroes—Esther! Mordechai! and more!—and a terrible villain–Haman! Whenever Haman’s name is spoken, the whole congregation is invited to boo and make noise.

The story describes how one young woman used creativity and cleverness to stand up against evil and fight for justice and safety for her people. We are telling this ancient tale, but with a twist. We’ll be using music from the musical Wicked! Our worship leaders will include our youth, who have been practicing the music and story in this Purim spiel for weeks. Join us as we tell this ancient story with a contemporary twist for a worship service that will bring us together with defiance and joy!
