Youth and Children’s Choir
Follen has two extremely active choirs for students in grades 1-12. Students from grades 1-5 sing in the Children’s Choir and students from grades 6-12 sing in the Youth Choir.
Singers learn music important to our Unitarian Universalist faith, as well as traditional pieces important to Follen Church. The choirs typically sing once a month in our services, at our annual Pageant performance, at Christmas Eve, and in our annual Gilbert and Sullivan musical theatre production.
In mid-June the combined Youth and Children’s choirs perform a fully-staged and double-cast Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta – a tradition that has lasted for over 50 years. These performances and all the work that leads up to them are a true celebration of the Follen community, as over 50 children and all their parents collaborate with energetic joy on an event that brings pride and self-confidence, as well as fun, to all involved. Sold-out audiences enjoy it tremendously. The operas performed in rotation include “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Iolanthe,” “The Yeomen of the Guard,” “Patience,” “Ruddygore,” and “The Gondoliers.”
The Music Program includes Children’s Choir for Grades 1-5, Youth Choir for Grades 6-12, and Spring Operetta for Grades 1-12. Children’s Choir rehearses on Mondays, 4 – 4:45 pm, and Youth Choir rehearses on Mondays, 5:15 – 6:15 pm, both starting September 16, 2019. Members of BOTH choirs stay in between, 4:45 – 5:15 pm, for “CH/OUTH LIMBO TIME” for special music projects: guitar/ukelele band, a cappella ensemble, solos, instrumentalists, drumming, and Operetta rehearsal starting in January. (No separate registration required for limbo time.) A schedule of rehearsal, performance and special event dates for both choirs will be available at follen.org in late summer. Please note that registration for the Spring 2020 Operetta will take place in December 2019. Contact Vivian Montgomery, Director of Music: vivian.musicdirector@
Children and youth must be registered in order to attend the religious education and children’s/youth choirs. Guests are welcome to visit up to three times before they are asked to register. While there is a fee for registration, if any program cost presents a financial hardship to your family scholarships and waivers are available. We would never want an inability to pay to prevent your child’s participation. Requests for financial assistance should be made to Sarah Garner, Church Administrator, and are held strictly confidential.
