The June Gilbert and Sullivan operetta is a Follen tradition going back more than 50 years. In spring, Youth and Children’s Choir members rehearse a G&S Operetta, which is performed on a June weekend. It’s a joyous, hilarious, music-filled way for families, friends and others to enjoy the special talents of our youth and children.
In early spring, the Music Director holds low-stress auditions for any students in 8th grade or above who would like a lead role in the musical. Preference is given to seniors, then juniors, etc.
It is important to note that all students who audition for lead roles will receive one. The production is always double cast with a “Friday night” cast and a “Saturday night” cast, to allow all leads their moment in the spotlight.
Students must participate in Youth or Children’s Choir for the full year to be eligible to be in the Operetta.
From costumes to sets, lighting, makeup, publicity, and finances, a huge team of Follen members work together to put this production on each year. In this vein, all families are expected to volunteer in some capacity during the operetta.
Leads will have additional rehearsals (typically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school) in May, to prepare for their performances. During the operetta preparation, Youth and Children’s Choirs continue to meet on Monday nights.

The Golden Rule

Touchstones can have a metaphorical meaning—your own personal touchstone might be a quote, image, book, story, memory or place to which you return when you need strength, hope, and peace. For example, many people of faith might point to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have done unto you.
