Operetta: A Follen Tradition
The June Gilbert and Sullivan operetta is a Follen tradition going back more than 50 years. In spring, Youth and Children’s Choir members rehearse a G&S Operetta, which is performed on a June weekend. It’s a joyous, hilarious, music-filled way for families, friends and others to enjoy the special talents of our youth and children. Because of the pandemic, the operetta is on hold. Here is some information about the 2020 Operetta.
The June 2020 operetta is The Gondoliers! Performances are June 12 and 13. Mark your calendars!
In February, the Music and Stage Directors hold low-stress auditions for any students in 6th grade or above who would like a lead role in the musical. Preference for the larger roles is given to older students.
It is important to note that all students who audition for lead roles will receive one. The production is often double cast with a “Friday night” cast and a “Saturday night” cast, to allow all leads their moment in the spotlight.
Students must participate in Youth or Children’s Choir to be eligible to be in the Operetta.
From costumes to sets, lighting, makeup, publicity, and finances, a huge team of Follen members work together to put this production on each year. In this vein, all families are expected to volunteer in some capacity during the operetta.
