With a worship theme of myth, today’s musical offerings connect to this theme in a variety of manners.

The prelude chosen by Shaylor is Gnossienne #2 by Erik Satie. “The etymology of the word gnossienne is contentious, but the word existed in French literature before Satie’s usage and is in the 1865 Larousse Dictionary, referring to the ritual labyrinth dance created by Theseus to celebrate his victory over the Minotaur, first described in the “Hymn to Delos” by Callimachus. Another explanation is that the word appears to derive from gnosis. Satie was involved in gnostic sects and movements at the time that he began to compose the Gnossiennes.”

“Old Time Religion” is a traditional 19th-century tune with relatively new lyrics by Pete Seeger and brand new lyrics by Follenite Jack “Anon.ahue” ;-). This rousing pantheistic interpretation was suggested for today’s service by Reverend Claire. It is led today by our tenors and basses. Please join in the refrains!
