Mother’s Day Walk for Peace

Sunday, May 11

The Mother’s Day Walk for Peace (MDW4P) is a beloved Boston tradition honoring the lives of our loved ones who have been murdered. It is the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute’s (LDBPI) largest fundraising event to grow and sustain its services, advocacy, and training.

Every Mother’s Day since 2012, many Follen families have participated in the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace. Follen’s Share the Plate on Sunday, May 11 will benefit the LDBPI. You can donate online or on Sunday during Share the Plate. If you’d like to join Follenites on the walk, you can register here. Email REJ@Follen.org if you would like to join a carpool to the walk.

Chaplain Clementina Chéry founded the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace 29 years ago when her son, Louis, was murdered; he was a 15-year-old heading to a youth meeting who was caught in gang crossfire. She wanted to find a way to grieve her son and also celebrate her living children on Mother’s Day. This walk was created for mothers and families of murdered children to receive support and love from their neighbors. Ever the optimist, Clementina’s work continues to provide important counseling and financial support to families that fall victim to gun violence, and to work for peace.

This year’s theme is “Cultivating Cycles of Peace.” In our society, we are constantly looped into cycles of violence that overshadow the transformative power of peace. We have the agency to cultivate these cycles by empowering survivors, supporting returning citizens and their families and investing in Generation Peace, the young people shaping the world.
