Follen Responds to Racism resumes its showing of films depicting Black lives. This winter we will focus on films based on historic events and/or people.
James Baldwin says that “the fact that white Americans, have not yet been able … to face their history, to change their lives – hideously menaces this country. Indeed, it menaces the entire world. For history, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read. And it does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do.”
We hope these films will help us to see how our history unconsciously controls us.
We have yet to decide the focus for the spring. We’d love to hear what you’d like to see.
