Susanne’s Blog: A Fire in My Bones

Tomorrow’s the last day of September and our theme of “Calling.” In her Ingathering sermon, Claire told the story of Jeremiah and the calling that was like “a fire in his bones.” That metaphor bowled me over. I know what that’s like, Jeremiah. I really do. I’m not saying I’m a prophet. Dear God, no! … Continued

Bernie Harleston Honored at Tufts

Follen’s own Bernie Harleston received one of Tufts University’s highest honors last Friday, when a dormitory was renamed for him in a festive dedication ceremony. Many Follenites attended. A pioneering African American academic and dean, he championed the rights of students of color to access higher education. Read “South Hall renamed Harleston Hall, honoring former dean” in … Continued

Plans Unveiled for Follen’s April 2017 Trip to Transylvania

In September 2014 Follen’s Partner Church Committee joyously hosted ten members from our Partner Church in Romania. Over a 25 year period more than 30 Follenites have visited our partners in Alsofelsoszentmihaly (AFSM). It is time for another visit. The Partner Church Committee has chosen the school vacation, April 13 to 23, 2017 to make it possible for families to join us. Additionally, we will offer high school students partial scholarships for this trip. … Continued

What’s Happening at Program Council?

Our worship theme this month is “Calling.” Although I’m a proud atheist, I have certainly felt called to service at Follen, as I think we really are only as strong as the willingness of our members to serve. Despite that, I am always more than a little shocked whenever someone at Follen asks me to … Continued

In the Interim: Thoughts from Deborah Weiner, Interim DRE

Today, in a staff retreat facilitated by a member of the excellent New England UUA regional staff, we talked about how long we have been at Follen Church. The answers ranged from 13.5 years to eight weeks – and I won the newbie prize. Eight weeks seems like nothing at all and yet, as I … Continued

You Too Can Be a Coffee Hour Food Angel

We all enjoy sharing a bite together after worship — so let’s all contribute to the bounty. If every Follenite signs up just once a year to bring in just one plate — a tray of fruit, or veg, or cookies — we’ll be sorted. Go to Follen Food Angels Signup.

Growing Vegetables, Growing Community

Pick a Day in October To Be a Gardener

Follen commits to work at Lexington’s Interfaith Garden behind First Parish UU church, off Lexington’s Green, where 14 houses of worship team up to grow fresh produce for the Lexington Food Pantry. We need two workers on:
  • Tuesday, October 4 & 11, 4:30 to 6 pm
  • Saturday, October 22, 8:30 to 10 am
If you can help, contact Janet Lane. Kids old enough not to trample are welcome to join their parents, and training is provided.
