Auditions for Patience, Follen’s 2018 Operetta

Audition Information

Auditions will be held Sunday February 4, 1-6pm, in the Follen Community Center. All roles will be cast gender blind based on seniority as well as skill.

Everyone who auditions will be cast in the production.

To audition, chose a named character and learn the music posted under that character. Learn the music between the red brackets marked.You do not need to have your music selection memorized, although it is recommended. A pianist will be accompanying you. After singing during your audition you will be asked to read a portion of dialogue opposite the directors. The character you read as may not be the same character you sang as or are auditioning for. Dialogue does not need to be memorized.

Each character has

  1. a section of dialogue to read.
  2. one or two musical excerpts to learn
  3. mp3 clip of the musical excerpts they are being asked to learn

Audition Form

You may print and fill out your audition form for Follen’s “Patience” ahead of time and bring it with you to your audition, or fill out an audition form at your audition on February 4, where there will be printed forms available. Be sure to mark any rehearsal days you are not able to attend.

Patience – Soprano

The village milkmaid and primary love interest to Bunthorn and Grosvenor. Patience is a woman who is very contented in life the way it is and knows what she likes.

Lady Jane – Contralto

A rich but lonesome lady, Jane is insecure in her looks but secure in her love for Bunthorn. She is Bunthorne’s faithful stalker and admirer and she is determined to find herself a husband.

Lady Angela – Mezzo Soprano

Angela was content with her boyfriend, the Colonel, until Bunthorne came along. She is jealous of Patience and believes that love cannot be true unless it is unselfish and is she who first gives Patience this idea.

Following Angela’s lead, Saphir has spurned the Major to follow Bunthorne. Similarly, if Angela had jumped off the pier, Saphir would have cannon-balled in after her.

One of the youngest maidens, Ella tries her best to keep up with the rest, aligning herself as often as possible with Saphir and Angela. Bunthorne is her first crush and she’s fallen hard.

Dialogue Excerpt

Reginald Bunthorne – originally a Baritone

Bunthorne is a ham and enjoys attention but doesn’t necessarily know what to want out of life. Bunthorne writes flowery, wordy poetry which delights the maiden chorus fanbase though fails to sway Patience. Grosvenor is a hitch in Bunthorne’s unending parade of flattery and must be stopped.

Grosvenor (pronounced Grov-ner) – originally a Baritone

Grosvenor is God’s gift to women, a curse and a responsibility he’d gladly relinquish if only he could love his childhood friend, Patience. His poetic style is much more matter of fact and realistic than that of the flowery Bunthorne.

The Duke just wants to be one of the simple folks. He has befriended the Colonel and Major and joined the military to try to pair down his extra royal life and live more commonly, though a touch of groveling still is not unwelcome.

Colonel- originally a Bass

The Colonel thinks he and his regiment are the greatest thing since sliced bread. He is the most confused by Angela and the other maiden’s change in affections and is determined to get them back from Bunthorn’s sway.
